Flavours of spam

As if the email spammers weren't bad enough, we now have "comment spam". On this site I have allowed anonymous comments on posts, hoping that occasionally someone might actually say something interesting. And sometimes they do. And sometimes they say things like "this site sucks" in capital letters, to which I can only say: why bother? But that is not the point of this post.

Recently I have noticed comment posts which are purely spam, links to commercial web sites, and the like. I really don't want to disable anonymous comments, but it's a major pain having to go through the comments and delete the spam. What to do? How about: "spammers, go away!".

Drupal module for dealing with comment spam
Check out this thread at drupal.org. Jeremy runs kerneltrap, so I'm sure he gets a lot more comment spam than you do! :-)

BTW, if you made the login box available on the front page, maybe people would be encouraged to register and log in, and therefore not post anonymously?

MR

use the commment approval queue
You can require anonymous comments to be approved. Thus the spam will never appear and at your leisure, as admin, you can delete them from the approval queue.

Now why on earth...
... did I not think of that myself? Thanks JDL! :)
